- Install new locks on your doors and windows. Many older locks can be flimsy and easy to break into. Also, many people assume that burglars can’t get in second story windows and often forget to install locks. (Here’s a tip: burglars are nimble climbers).
- Install motion or heat sensing floodlights in your front and backyard .
- Install self-charging smoke detectors.
- Don’t leave ladders or tools in your yard or in an unlocked shed. Burglars will use these tools to break into your home.
- Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen or on every floor. Make sure everyone knows how to use it.
- If mail theft is a problem in your neighborhood, consider a locking mailbox. Mail theft is more than an inconvenience; it can lead to identity theft.
